About Madcap: Madcap started DJing 18 years ago when he was 11 years old, mixing up house & breakbeat – more generally referred to as ‘Old Skool Rave’ nowadays. Playing out at friends house parties, local sports halls and clubs over the coming years started his confidence on the decks and also gave Madcap reason to start producing demo mixes to give out. .. Being so young was a stumbling block but this changed when securing a job at local record shop Buzz Records, which was associated with DJ Pulse and the influential Creative Wax label. Meeting with punters and promoters alike, Madcap soon found himself being booked up & down the UK for sets. .. At the end of 1994 Madcap started putting on events in Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire (because there wasn’t much on offer for the younger generation at the time in this area) featuring local DJs & MCs. This was a good experience because it gained a following for him as well as the events themselves. Madcap went on to promote events under the names Intensity 96-2001 (later alongside Wilsh), Elevate 2000-2002, Essence 2002 (alongside Wilsh), Storm 2003-2004 & Synthesis at the Rhythm Factory, London back in August & October ’08 . All the events were about good vibes and good music along with pushing DJs in the local area. .. Madcap grew up listening to DJ’s such as Hype, Ratty, Sy, Slipmatt, Carl Cox & LTJ Bukem, with more recent influences like Marky .. One particular highlight of Madcaps’ DJing career so far was winning the Movement / Technics DJ Competition in 2002, as featured in DJ Magazine. The prize was a main room set at Movements’ weekly event at Bar Rumba, London – along with 2 Technics Decks & Mixer. Other notable features on Madcap is his appearance in IDJ Magazine January 2004, winning “Mix Tape of the Month” and also coming 4th place in the Gemini DJ Competition at The Plaza Awards, Earls Court in 2003. .. In the last few years Madcap has been very busy in the studio and is currently working with DJ Pulse on new tunes & is planning to re-launch Creative Wax. He has just started a DnB digital label called Uncertified Music (with Wilsh & Ascension). More recently Madcap has been heavly influenced by the new J-Tek sound, & has made quite a few tracks, working with the 145bpm is exciting as originally when the Jungle Techno sound hit the scene back in 93 he was very much into it but was only 13 at the time. .. Other recent projects & news include plans for Nookie to remix My Soul & release it on Phuzion. He Featured in the August 2007 ‘Orange Issue’ of Knowledge magazine, in the Essence of Chi article & a half page interview in the November ’07 issue. .. He has had the pleasure of playing at events such as Movement, Desire, Essence of Chi, London ZU, Switch (MoS), Drive By, Technicality, Moondance, Cloud 9, Refresh, Drum Club, Overload, Epidemik, Bar Knowledge, Helter Skelter, Evolution & Kinetic, Uncertified, Drum Project, Synthesis, Grind House (Edinburgh), Lowdown & Monthly residency in local Bar the Black Boy. .. All of this brings us to the present time with Madcap, getting regular bookings and pushing himself to the fullest of his abilities.
About Wilsh: Growing up “out in the sticks” in Buckinghamshire, Wilsh wasn’t exposed to dnb as early as a lot of old skool dnb heads. “I grew up listening to electro thanks to one of my older brothers. I was very vaguely aware of the acid house era, but I was diverted into more rock/heavy metal territory for a few years, whilst still following electro through the likes of Kraftwerk. By the early 90s I was listening to a varied range of music from commercial rave compilations to Kraftwerk, New Order and Marillion, but I began to find pirate radio stations while playing with my radio. Being out in no-man’s land, the reception wasn’t good, but I think Don FM managed to reach out that far! At first I hated it, but I was intrigued. So after repeated listening to the same tape over and over, I made the transition from more conventional bands to the underground scene. After that, Fabio, Randall, Hype and Bukem were the guys I looked out for.” Matt continues: “In about 1994 or 1995, I got my decks. I took my cues from the likes of Randall, Bukem, Fabio and Bailey. Randall in particular – he’s just so smooth, that style of mixing… it’s my idea of perfection. The versatility of those DJs too – that’s what I strive for, but I’ll always have one eye on the dancefloor.” .. Wilsh began to establish a name as a somewhat accomplished deck technician, first locally and then further afield, with the number of bookings he received growing in and around London. In 2002 his DJing skills were recognised by ATM magazine, who selected him for the final of the ATM/Trouble on Vinyl DJ competition from around 1000 competitors. With guest spots at events such as Traffic and Gridlock and residencies on a number of net-based radio stations, Wilsh’s profile began to expand even further. His mind ever open to different beats, it wasn’t long before Wilsh became a regular name at events in London, from Movement to Traffic to Telepathy. Wilsh made his Technicality debut in February 2004 and was offered a residency at the same time. Since then he has continued to play at some of the most well known club events in London, such as Movement, Traffic, Essence of Chi, Therapy Session, London Zu as well as the bigger raves like Desire. .. Not one to stick with only one outlet in music, Wilsh has been hard at work with production and not just drum and bass. Working on his own and alongside Madcap and Skopes, his tunes have been gaining some respect. With a few tunes awaiting release, it’s only a matter of time before the public can hear such great music… *ahem*. Wilsh and Madcap are also working on a couple of undisclosed official old skool remixes which may just see the light of day. .. Wilsh is comfortable playing anything related to jungle drum and bass from 1992 to the present day, right across the board – so don’t label him as being a one trick pony. With an interest in old skool UK garage, breaks and dubstep he can provide a versatile set if required… .. Words by Phokus.
